Description: All boundaries were mapped as accurately as possible using theinformation available. These areas have been digitizedfrom registeredimages, no coordinates or precise locations are used in legislation todescribe the areas.Marine parks are not administered by the Department of Conservationthey are protected by the Fisheries and Harboursacts or under their own special legislation.Marine Parks are established under the Fisheries Act 1983 and continueto be protected, with the passing of the Fisheries Act.Some of the restrictions in the area may already be in place under other legislation like the Fisheries Act, for example the Hauraki Gulf MarinePark. It may be that parts of existing parks with the greatest restrictions in place, rather than the whole park, protect biodiversity to a sufficientlevel tobe included in the network.Hauraki Gulf Marine Park Act: The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park was established by special legislation inFebruary 2000. The park protects important areaswithin a lived-in,worked-in environment and includes land controlled by differentagencies.This park was digitized using a registered image of the map in Schedule3 of the act.Mimiwhangata Marine Park: Mimiwhangata Marine Park is located on Northland's east coast. ThePark was established in 1983 to protect isspectacular scenery, wildlifeand cultural heritage for recreational purposes. The park covers an areaof 2000 hectares.This park was digitized using a registered image of the map of theproposed Mimiwhangata Marine reserve from theDepartment ofConservation.Tawharanui Marine Park:Tawharanui Marine Park is located north ofAuckland on the north coast of Tawharanui Peninsula. The park isadministered by Auckland Regional Council. Tawharanui Marine Parkwas established in 1981 onthe northern coast of Tawharanui Peninsulacovering an area of 588 hectares, approximately 80 minutes north of Auckland. The Marine Park complements the terrestrial TawharanuiRegional Park that covers the peninsula.This parkwas digitized using a registered image of the map of theproposed Mimiwhangata Marine reserve from the AucklandRegionalCouncil.Sugar Loaf Islands Marine Protected Area: Sugar Loaf Islands marine environment was formerly classified as a marinepark. However, this status was changed with theintroduction of the Sugar LoafIslands Marine Protected Areas Act 1991.Nga Motu/Sugar Loaf Islands. Just offshore from NewPlymouth, the Sugar Loaf Islands Marine ProtectedArea (SLIMPA) comprises seabed, foreshore and waters around the SugarLoafIslands (Nga Motu).This area was digitized from coordinates contained in the Act.
