Description: The Eastern Tarakihi Management Strategy and Rebuild Plan(the Plan) aims to rebuild East Coast tarakihi through two concurrent work streams; Management Measures and Enhancing Science. The Plan, developed by Fisheries Inshore New Zealand, Te Ohu Kaimoana, and Southern Inshore Fisheries, represents the commercial fishing industry’s commitment to sustainable management of the East Coast tarakihi fishery. The Plan includes a number of voluntary measures to support the rebuild of the fishery, including measures to reduce juvenile mortalities. These voluntary closed areas have been identified as areas with high abundance of juvenile tarakihi that should be avoided.Avoidance of these areas is a voluntary measure which was put in place in October 2019 under the Eastern Tarakihi Management Strategy and Rebuild PlanThe voluntary closed areas were introduced as a part of the Regional Management and Monitoring Plan (the RMMP) for TAR2, developed as part of the Eastern Tarakihi Management Strategy and Rebuild Plan. Signatories to the RMMP for TAR2 have voluntarily committed to not trawl in these areas for tarakihi to avoid juvenile mortalities.
