Display Field: Name

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: The Marine Areas represent the jurisdiction of the Marine Guardians of the associated area, as established in their legislation of origin. These boundaries encompass several different restrictions, regulatory areas, marine mammal sanctuaries, and marine reserves and are used as a general reference for grouping these areas together. They essentially act as a regional boundary for marine management. So far only two marine areas exist in legislation: Kaikōura and Fiordland. Please update this should more areas become legislated.Territorial Sea and Topo 50 Coastline datasets sourced from LINZ and released under CC-BY 4.0 were used in the creation of this dataset. The Fiordland Marine Area was mapped as per the legislation description to follow the Territorial Sea due to the misalignment of coordinates with the Territorial Sea layer.Points from the legislation were used to map the areas. Please refer to the legislation for information on the founding of the areas, and regulations within:Fiordland- http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2005/0036/latest/whole.htmlKaikōura - http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2014/0059/latest/whole.html
